COVID-19 latest: Total cases in SA now exceed 80 000, death toll at 1 674

The number of COVID-19 cases in South Africa has increased by 4 078 since Tuesday, 16 June 2020.

The latest COVID-19 figures were released, which showed an uptick of new cases in the Western Cape and Eastern Cape.

COVID-19 update: Wednesday, 17 June 2020

Minister Mkhize said in a statement that South Africa’s cumulative COVID-19 caseload now stands at 80 412; an increase of 4 078 new cases since Tuesday, 16 June 2020.

The statement also verified that 44 331 people have recovered from COVID-19. Unfortunately, an additional 49 deaths were also reported, 43 from Western Cape, and 6 from the Eastern Cape.

Tests and screening

As of today, a total of 1 200 736 tests have been conducted, of which 28 202 were done in the last 24 hours. The total number of tests conducted in the private sector stands at 582 957, of which 15 782 were done in the last 24 hours.

In addition, 617 779 tests were conducted in the public sector, with 12 420 being done within the last 24 hours.

New cases in Eastern Cape

President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation on Wednesday evening and said that the Eastern Cape would “catch up” with the Western Cape in just a few weeks. He explained:

“The Western Cape has so far been hardest hit by the disease, accounting for about 60% of infections across the country. […] There are indications that transmission in the Eastern Cape is now starting to rise and may just be a few weeks behind the Western Cape.”

He added that the command council “massively increased screening for coronavirus symptoms throughout the country, at every workplace, school, university, shopping centre, place of worship, taxi rank or other public space where people gather”.

Global COVID-19 news

At the time of publishing, confirmed cases, globally, stand at 8 343 673; death toll now stands at 448 539 along with 4 364 062 recoveries. There are 3 531 072 active cases, of which 54 498 are critical.

The USA still has the most confirmed cases: 2 223 855. In addition, the USA also recorded 448 539 deaths and 904 182 recoveries. Brazil currently has the second-most cases in the world: 934 769 confirmed cases, with 45 585 deaths and 477 364 recoveries.

South Africa is currently 21st on the list.
